Zorn, the director of the Doctor of Medical Science program at Butler, had taught in the PA (Physicians Assistant/Associate) program from 2006-2019, but she wanted to transition to a more administrative role. To do that, Zorn – who has a bachelors of science in Biology and a Master’s of Science in Physicians Associate – would need a doctorate.

No degree, no seat at the table.

She started looking at doctorate-level degrees in healthcare – and found one at Butler. The new Doctor of Medical Science program, a doctorate program for PAs, started in 2020. Zorn was among the first graduating class in May 2021.

She built her own table.

What happened next was “serendipitous,” she says. “As I was graduating, Butler University was hiring a director for the DMS program. I was working on getting the right tools so when an opportunity came up, I could apply.”

When Zorn started as the director there were only three DMS programs in existence. Now there are 16. With the DMS program, she gets to connect with PAs and be part of a growing field, a field she loves.

There are many reasons to become a PA rather than a medical doctor. For starters, PAs can practice in every state and in every medical setting or specialty, including dermatology, pathology, cardiology, surgery, family medicine, etc. Also, PAs have a better work life balance than doctors as they are allowed more time off and do not have to be on call 24/7. Yet, this degree is still part of the healthcare industry and PAs are able to diagnose and treat patients shortly after graduation, while making a competitive salary.

However, since the PA program didn’t have a doctorate level degree, the PAs were disadvantaged when it came to getting promotions and administrative positions. No one was giving them a seat at the table.

Now they can have one.

“The best part of my job is developing careers and giving PAs new opportunities,” she said.

Zorn makes an impact every day as this program shapes and prepares PAs for new opportunities. She is helping them get jobs that were not available to them before just because they didn’t have a doctorate degree.

In her free time, Zorn teaches the courses she loves, and she volunteers at the free clinic where she gets to connect with patients. The DMS program gave her the credentials she needed to get the administrative position that granted her the free time to volunteer and give back to her community.

Now she helps other PAs do the same.
